The Cambridge CELTA Course

What is CELTA?

The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)
is a widely recognised, pre-service qualification for teachers of English in Australia and overseas, accredited and administered by the University of Cambridge. (Please note: to teach in Australia, a university degree is also required.)

The cost is $3100 plus visa administration fees.

Who

Candidates must:

  • Be at least 20 years of age (applicants over 18 may be interviewed in exceptional cases);
  • Have a good educational background (preferably of university entrance standard);
  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English.

When

Trainees can choose from a 4-week intensive training or 10-week part-time training.

Intensive 2nd March – 27th March
Intensive 4th May – 29th May
Intensive 15th June -10th July
Parti-time 6th July – 16th September
Intensive 21st September -16th October
Intensive 2nd November – 27th November

What

The course is divided into:

Language Analysis

  • Develop an ability to analyse language in terms of meaning, form, sound and usage;
  • Mainly focus on grammar and pronunciation.

Methodology

  • Different approaches to language teaching;
  • Techniques for presentation and practice of new language;
  • Classroom management;
  • Lesson-planning;
  • Use of commercially produced and authentic materials;
  • Developing listening, reading and writing skills.

Teaching Practice

  • Each trainee is required to complete a minimum of 6 hours observed teaching practice with classes of adult learners.
    Observation of Experienced Teachers
  • This involves observing Language Centre teachers for a total of 8 hours during the course.

How to apply

  1. Contact Japanese Melbourne and we’ll provide the necessary application forms.
  2. Complete and return the forms.
  3. Applicants must apply 4 weeks prior to the opening date of the desired course.
  4. Within a week, Melbourne Training Associates (MTA) will provide an invoice upon completion of procedures.
  5. Pay full fee to MTA.
  6. Start training.
  7. End training and apply for a teaching position in Japan.
  8. Receive entry permit, receipt, and other documents.
  9. Achievement unlocked: English teacher in Japan!
